Happy new year, and sorry for all the reading!
Updated to use some new fonts from comicbookfonts.com’s annual New Year’s Day sale! Check it out, you toony types! All their fonts are $20.12 today. Even the $19 fonts are $20.12! It’s kooky!
pfft. Computers… who can deal with ‘em? Am I right?
One of my earliest influences is Walt Kelly. If you want to treat yourself to some fun and funny cartoon art pick up a copy of Pogo: Through the Wild Blue Wonder Volume 1. I already have about a dozen Pogo books, but this looks like the start of a collection worth having! That, and Krazy Kat! Those gorgeous covers!
If you are a charitable person, please consider a donation to Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy organization. It’s a necessary and awesome cause to support! I ask in support of one of my very best friends, Pat Moeschen who has lived with Duchenne’s for too, too long. Nothing would be a better gift than one day finding a solution to this disease.
Tell’m Scotty A sent you!
CK finally musters up the courage and conviction to follow his dreams and make a difference! And like so many of us… fails anyway.
If you’re into Kickstarter (like me) I wanted to pass along a thing that I want to see happen. Ed Power and Melissa DeJesus (creators of My Cage) are trying to fund their graphic novel, Santa vs Dracula, and the funny comic world would be a better place if it were. Go check it out, and drop a few bucks in the jar!!
There’s only hours left to go! Tell’m Scotty A sent you!
Update: They made it!
I skipped a week to recharge my creative batteries! Gonna try getting a little experimental here. Bear with me!
It was such a joy to draw good ol’ Mittens again. Everyone needs a punching bag!
We’re still trying to nail down the issue with some visitors unable to view the site on certain browsers. If you’re a dual-OS type person, and find yourself unable to see CK on a WinXP machine, please tell us what you do see! (Once you get up, from rolling on the floor, laffing, that is!)
I hate when that happens!
We’re still trying to nail down the issue with WinXP/IE visitors not being able to see the site. If you see any special message, please drop a line! And thank you for the replies we’ve gotten already!
Who does the computer call when she needs tech support?
I’m getting reports of people unable to see CK from IE8 on a WinXP machine. I any of you cross-platform people would be so kind as to confirm or deny this? Brian and I are trying to remedy this. Well, Brian is. I couldn’t code my way out of a wet paper bag. But I am providing encouragement!
So I’m late with the comic… I need a good idea to draw quickly. I know! Let’s fill up the last panel with dozens of little wires!

Suspense!!
Hey don’t forget! The official Commander Kitty Facebook page has pencil sketches of each and every episode. Check it out now before you forget! See the shiny blue button up top there? It’s so much fun to click on buttons!

Once, I dreamt about catching a football. I shot my arm out to catch it, knocking over my clock and a cup full of pens and pencils on the nightstand next to my bed. Keep in mind, I’ve never played football.
I didn’t imagine this turn of events when I began CK, but life throws funny curves at you.
I do like nectarines, myself!
The title is a reference to this television public service announcement that most channel 56 cartoon watching New Englanders of the early 80′s must be familiar with.
It’s got a speakerphone, remember?
Another slow burn! Things are heating up!
Please tell all your friends about Commander Kitty!
Please tell people about Commander Kitty. The mailman.. the pizza delivery guy… the girl sitting next to you on the bus.. ANYONE!
Whoa! Who saw that coming?
Part of the CK lexicon
bitzy: |bit-tzee| (adj.) 1: a Spacer who acts like a big shot, but has no experience.
numph: (also numpf) |numf| (n) 1: a Spacer with few or no skills at all.
Don’t forget to tell your friends about Commander Kitty! Or he’ll die! They’ll all die! Horribly! Even adorable little Fluffy. You wouldn’t want that, would you?? Tell your friends!

Aw… MOUSE was almost helpful there for a minute!
Plus, how much you think Mittens wanted to say that line? I bet really a lot.

This is Fortiscue’s big scene! He did this bit on his screen test. Left us all weeping like babes.
I have three very patient CK fans to draw commissions and send lots of buttons to, so don’t donate any more! I’m sequestering myself in my dark quiet place til I get them done. Then you can flood me with more work!
In the meantime, (as always) tell all your friends about Commander Kitty!!
addendum;
I want to pass along a link to Ctrl+Paint. They have fantastic Photoshop tips on digital painting techniques, and they’re explained simply so even a dummy like me can understand them!
As I try to get more arty in my backgrounds, I hope these techniques will be useful!
I have to make this an official break until I complete some important work! Don’t worry. CK will be back before you know it!
New episode on Sunday!
You never know what’s gonna happen when you look for a bathroom in the kwazy comic!

I’ve got to put CK aside for a short while. I’ve just got a metric buttload of work on my plate at the moment, and it needs my undivided attention. I hate doing this to my legion of fans, but sometimes you gotta make money!

Good thing she’s got that big sight on her gun there… she only seems to fire at point-blank range though. Remember kids. Weapons are not for playing with! You just leave that alone.

Oooh… flip just got real!
Today’s funny is dedicated to a funny guy, JP Morgan. I’m sure he would like to see CK and Nin Wah get in a good scrap on his behalf.
JP (creator of Fission Chicken) passed away on Dec 30, 2010. I’m glad he got to wrap up his story before leaving. We can all hope for as much.
Ah, MOUSE. I love writing your insults. It was hard to see you get knocked down a peg.
I’m trying a much simpler method of drawing the backgrounds. So far, I really like it. So less stressful than giving everything an outline. I’ve been in an experimenting mood lately!
Valentines day is soon. Have you showed your Commander Kitty love with a link? Give him some sugar!
I mention tablas, because I recently got myself a set to putter around with. They are wicked hard to play well. But have a relaxing sound that any doofus can enjoy.

I must say, I really really like this new Mittens!
The comic was late because I needed to take care of some extra projects I had on my plate. I really apologize! A couple of you have sent generous tips, and the sketches and buttons are on their way!!
So when I finally got the time for CK, I thought if I did this comic in a looser style (as you see) it would save me some time, but I only ended up thinking twice as much to do things that came naturally before. So consider this an experiment!
Amazing what a simple change of scenery will do for one’s attitude! And yeah her blue hotness’ name is Zenith. All will be explained in time.

UPDATE.
Hey, I’m super sorry, CK fans. I’m just trying to catch up to some previous commitments. I wanna get back to CK as bad as you do! Don’t worry!
Nin Wah wants to remind you about Firefox Live! The Knoxville Zoo needs names for these cute little red panda cubs, and she thinks she’s a pretty good role model! Go vote today! (or just check out the overwhelming cuteness)

Like roowr, baby! I know what you were thinking… is CK gonna be another week late. No!
Nin Wah is referring to her old spacer chum Grootly, and the rest of her old gang, who were last seen (alive) in this comic.
And hey, check it out! You can watch this comic being inked and colored here!

If I haven’t mentioned it yet, I took on way more freelance stuff than I should have this summer. Kinda of burned me out, and it’s catching up with me now. But one thing I can’t rush is Commander Kitty.

I used to have a rear-view mirror on my drawing desk… (took it off my first car, the Millennium Concord) Since digitizing and switching to a Cintiq, that mirror has somehow vanished.
So when I’m trying to figure out the best expression of disgust on NW’s face there on panel 5, I opened up Photo Booth and made faces at my iMac camera. Still, I miss the old mirror with all the stickers I put on it.

Update: Oct 14th
I know there are some webcomics that can go for months on end without updating, and suffer no ill consequences. Some can even increase viewer anticipation by not being consistent. I don’t know where CK is on that flowchart, but I’m guessing it’s pretty low.
In any case, just a couple business things have interrupted my routine, and CK will be a little late again! I guess you knew that!
Sorry for the delay, everyone! Just one of those things, you know?
Also! Check out today’s Frog Raccoon Strawberry for more Scotty work!
Enjoy!
9-19 – Today’s comic will be late! Help CK pay the bills by ordering some buttons!
9-23 – Hey y’all! Haven’t forgotten you! Just need a little more time to take care of some business. Believe me, I’d rather be doing CK!!!
Hey! Just thought I’d mention that I am available for commissions! A donation is appreciated, but you can pretty much name your own price for a simple drawing. Just promise you’ll post a link to Commander Kitty!
I think we’re done with this hotel here. Next week… back to SPACE!
Everyone, you remember Morris from Ace’s crew? Very good.
Check out the EXTRAS section for new Commander Kitty wallpapers, starring CK, Nin Wah and Mr Socks! More to follow!

Hey, keep checking the CK Facebook page, and the Twitter feeds down there. From time to time, I’ll be doing some live drawing on UStream. Come check it out!
The contact page was disabled for a while there. Sorry bout that! It’s back up and running now, ready to shower me with admiration from my awesome fans!
For best results read this episode really fast! And it helps if you jiggle your monitor around on the last panel.
I was determined not to let this little rewind take forever, and I wanna get back to teh funnies, and I was inspired by a post in the Facebook Club and I wound up with this jam-packed comic.
And a big thanks to Coverless for their Commander Kitty blog review. You can see all the episode sketches and layouts on the CK Facebook page!
Sorry for the delay!
This week, I want to pass along my good friend Red Tango’s new silly site, StuffWomenLike.net. Unicorns.. Diet Fresca… Air fresheners that smell like glades and waterfalls and things… Chock full of stuff that girls can’t help but go gaga over.

(and while you’re there, you can check out some web graphics by me! …I can draw a unicorn if I want!)
I was told by my Mum that when I was a wee humanling, I was investigating a little bottle of glitter (not olives), holding it up to the light, and the lid fell off, and it spilled all on my face. I imagine I freaked out like out friend Fortiscue there!
So much going on in this episode! It’s good to know things are all going according to plan!
I’ve been re-reading Osamu Tezuka’s Buddha again. I just can’t get over the way he incorporates such absurd visuals and dialog in such serious, epic story telling. At first I was like, “what the heck is he doing?” I know of no other comic artist that has the guts to get away with that sort of thing.
I promised myself… if I was going to have a hottie villain like this, that she’d be able to act ridiculous from time to time. Nothing worse than a funny comic being dragged down by some uppity, high falutin’ emotionless dame!
CK could learn a thing or two from Ace. It’s all about keeping the right attitude! Although in making this comic, I discovered that Ace is not as sharp as he should be at times! We’ll see how much it takes to freak out Freeda before she raises the alarm. Hmm.. Freak Out Freeda. Sounds like a new alternative band from Boston.
Did you know you can watch a recording of this comic being made? Right here!
Join the Commander Kitty Facebook page to be notified at other live drawing shows!
And don’t forget! There are buttons!
Sorry about that satirical digression last week! Not sure how that actually went down. Back to story now!
Nin Wah’s back to her normal costume now. Finally!
And hey, lookit that, there are buttons! They’re 1.5″ in diameter, and have all your favorite Commander Kitty crew members.
Send a $5 donation for your favorite character, or $25 for all six!
All orders come with an original sketch, and a signed glossy Commander Kitty promo card. I made them for Comic Con last year, and I’ve got tons of ‘em left!
Thank you for your support!
This newest episode will be a bit tardy. You know, the holiday weekend and all! Please stay tuned!
Gerry Cheevers (#30 – retired) was a goaltender for the Boston Bruins from 1965-1980, and head coach of the Bruins from 1981-1985. His streak of 33 undefeated games in 1972 still stands as an NHL record today.
During a practice in the 68-69 season, he painted some stitches on his mask where a puck had struck him. Soon, the mask was covered in painted stitches, becoming a lasting icon of his relentless style of play, and of the sport itself.
I think I’ve got about 5 different color variations of those little ships. I gotta go back and make sure everything looks the same! That’s not retconning, is it? That’s just sloppy cartooning! I’m thinking of adding a little contest section. I’ve got some buttons being made for prizes. Stand by!
So, for those of you new to the CK Galaxy, it’s like this. So far, we’ve dealt a lot with planet Gazelle (and before too long, I hope to go other places!) Gazelle is part of the Antelo system, along with planets like Oryx and Saiga… different species in the Antelope family (more or less!). So when someone says, “he’s a Ferret”, it’s like saying he’s from Ferret.
Generally, a planet is mostly populated by the namesake species, but they all mingle and play nice together. There will be baddies though! Having explained all that, I wanna get out of Gazelle, and off to other places soon, before this turns into another bus. Don’t ask about the bus. Forget I said anything!
I like this episode. I decided to give a fancy background a try. And it’s got Ace and his crew. Those guys are swell!
Don’t forget to check out the Commander Kitty page on Facebook!
I’m actually getting a comic ahead in my pipeline. Now that this crazy plot is falling into place, the ideas are coming thick and fast. Once hockey season winds up, I’ll really make some headway.
More of the Tagged here!
I just wanted to add a quick comment. Fans who have been using the old RSS feed should be automatically redirected to the new feed, thanks to Mr Emling’s help!. If you haven’t been to the homepage for a while, come on by and check out CK’s new digs!
I don’t watch the news very much, so I don’t know who the hot reporters are these days. But this Keith Olbermann fellow had the Cinematic Titanic crew on his show the other day, so he was fresh in my mind. That, and “Olberlope” is fun to say!
Sorry to say, those I.I.I. jerks are still alive!
Thanks for all the compliments and the help tweaking the rough spots! I’m glad you all like the new look!
Another shout out I’d like to give is to my friend Brian Reynolds who colored most of the early episodes if the new CK. I had planned on it lasting longer than it did, but a few unproductive weeks last year, and I had exhausted my reserve of strips and began coloring them myself again out of necessity. My fault!
Maybe I’ll get a few weeks ahead at some point, but I am enjoying coloring them again.
You may or may not know I’m a big hockey fan, so maybe when the season’s over, I’ll have something better to do with my time… like drawing!
Thank you, Brian Emling for his indispensable help in getting CK out of the stone age! I hope you like! Future comics will be in this tall format, and an extra 200 pixels wide for you, my loyal fans.
I will be tweaking the bits that I find need tweaking, like the ads below there… don’t know why they haven’t kicked in yet. I’ll maybe try out a widget or two along the way. If you got any suggestions, please let me know! And of course, I have to add all the rest of the comics… manually. Enjoy!
Like I said, I am heading out to SDCC this time around! I’ve never been there before.
Everything I hear about it tells me there’s no way to fully prepare yourself for it, so I’m not! I’m just packing a bag (and bringing an empty one) and heading out.
I will most likely base myself at RedTango‘s booth (#4201, next to the Starbucks!) and I will have some CK postcards to hand out. Please stop by!
If I can’t prepare, I can at least take inventory of what comics I’m missing. I don’t collect as many comics as I used to, but what I like, I would like to keep complete. My Usagi Yojimbo graphic novels, Tezuka’s Phoenix saga. Maybe a little animation cel hunting to add to my walls! I’ll be sure to swing by Scott Christian Sava’s booth and say hey!
I went to the first New York Comic Con (no relation, I believe), and it was so crowded and congested, the throngs of people inside just inched around like caterpillars. You could literally get seasick just wandering around. I’m hoping San Diego, as big as it is, is at least a little roomier.
It tries so hard, and… well, no it doesn’t.
I like MOUSE a lot. It’s the character I think of when I talk back to the TV. I think of MOUSE when I’m forced to sit through commercials when I call tech support. It puts up with so much, and can do so little.
MOUSE is the AI system abord CK’s ship. Its function is to control ships systems and act as a sort of direct interface. This is assisted with the use of a mobile robot unit in the shape of a small gold mouse. (clever, eh?)
In case of accidental (or deliberate) destruction, another MOUSE unit is automatically replicated. Multiple MOUSE units can be activated when needed, though I can’t imagine why you’d want to do that.
To facilitate a smooth interaction with the ships commanding officer, each MOUSE unit is enabled with onboard Vocodeo™ software which lets you communicate naturally with your little robot friend.
The MOUSE OS is programmed in powerful, adaptable Actionscript 3000™. With a minimum of effortÜ, you too can create subroutines and adjust your little robot friend as it suits your purposes.
Be sure to use genuine MOUSE software when upgrading or adding on to your MOUSE’s OS. The use of pirated software can damage your system’s efficiency, and may make communicating with it problematic.
By reading this, you agree to the EULA, and release the manufacturer from all damage incurred to your property or person as the result of the actions of your MOUSE AI system.
Enjoy, and happy exploring!
Ü user guide and Actionscript 3000™ programming bible sold separately. Available at all fine space vehicle dealers and bookstores. Classes and specialized training available at additional cost. Average length of full training period from 2-3 years. Loans available from most licensed SpaceCreditô brokers
There. A second comic. Now I have an archive!
The first comic I expected to come out on Sunday, but it says Saturday. Fenn, if you’re reading, what time zone is this thing set to?
The archives of the past aren’t available yet. At the moment, I just don’t want to confuse the two. This new story has nothing to do with Pango’s scales, or CK’s real name… Yogurt might play a small part in the future
I’m looking into a different domain host that will let me add more options and stuff to CK. My host just isn’t keeping with the times!
In the meantime, please tell your friends CK is back! And thanks very much for all the great mail!
That being said, I never understood why I need an RSS feed. (maybe I’m the one not keeping with the times.) I visit these sites anyway, what difference is it whether I see the headlines on the website or in my bookmarks? Am I missing the point?
This comic is not about games, but I do play them. Most of my fun time is being eaten up by LittleBigPlanet. I’m trying to build an ice world game where you rescue a penguin from …something. Haven’t figured everything out yet.
And finally, a big shout back to Scott Christian Sava from The Dreamland Chronicles. Get diggin’ on his jukebox! (and his fantastic comic!)
Addendum, 1/6/2009
A couple people have told me my RSS feed is malfunctioning. I assure you, I had no idea I even had an RSS feed. I’m looking at how I go about removing it. (or fixing it, whatever it does!)
——-
What was it, 4 years ago? CommanderKitty.com’s host has a meltdown around Februaryish, and took a couple weeks to bring back to a wobbly state of functionality. After a second failure, I moved my site to a different host, but the hustle bustle of work-life was eating its way more and more into my free time. So I put CK and crew on the side for a long hiatus.
Now that I’ve been fortunate enough to move out of New Jersey, and closer to family, my head began thinking of CK, Mittens, Socks and all the other warped cartoon facets of my inner psyche. They were getting too loud in my head, and I needed to express them. And since Plan A was very illegal and required a six-week wait, I settled on Plan B: Start the webcomic again!
This is a retelling of Commander Kitty. A new canon, if you will. Consider the first incarnation a rough draft to iron out all my bad storytelling habits. (That smegging bus!). You know, kinda like what they’re doing with the new Star Trek movie. Dontcha think? Kinda?
Helping me this time around with his nice coloring touch is Brian Reynolds. I’m thankful he’s able to spare the time to help me out! Say hello to the nice people!
Before too long, I’ll be adding a CK Store, and maybe a forum. So stick around! Enjoy!
– Scotty A
