Gerry Cheevers (#30 – retired) was a goaltender for the Boston Bruins from 1965-1980, and head coach of the Bruins from 1981-1985. His streak of 33 undefeated games in 1972 still stands as an NHL record today.

During a practice in the 68-69 season, he painted some stitches on his mask where a puck had struck him. Soon, the mask was covered in painted stitches, becoming a lasting icon of his relentless style of play, and of the sport itself.
