I guess it’s some kind of word-joke that only works in English. Too bad I’m german.

The only thing I can think of is that it’s a Beatles reference.

There was supposed to be some sort of joke there?

  12. BDKMat

Just… A Day in the Life …of a cartoonist who’s too clever for his own good.

Well I’m taking solace in the fact that the group’s reactions in the last panel have probably never so accurately matched those of my audience this time ’round.
Once they get it, I mean.

    heh.

Oh, next Sunday can’t come fast enough…

Aw man, I’m kinda disappointed in myself for not getting the joke. And I should have. It’s the genre of music I grew up listening to, and I’ve heard the song enough to sing along with parts of it. Oh well, I’ve always been more of a Queen fan anyway.

I’m old enough to get it right off, but am somewhat surprised (or maybe disappointed) that the reference has so slipped out of the current popular mind. I thought the last panel reaction was due to everyone getting, but not nessisarily appreciating, the joke.

The Beatles’ music survived this far into the future? That’s comforting actually. I can only hope Miley Cyrus and other pop stars were became obsolete. You may say I’m dreamer, but…

The computer room actually reminds me a bit of the computers in Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as scenes from Portal 2 (though those were testing chambers, not computers).

Alright, got it now, thanks Wikipedia. So here’s the relevant passage for those who still wonder:
The Beatles song “A Day in the Life”.
“An article in the Daily Mail about a plan to fill potholes in the town caught John Lennon’s eye as he was writing the song, giving birth to the lyric:
I read the news today, oh boy /
4,000 holes in Blackburn, Lancashire /
And though the holes were rather small /
They had to count them all /
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.”

I thought it was a reference to the floating blue things that are the representation of the soul in Japanese culture, and that was why she was laughing.
